The vinyl wall covering is ideal in this laundry room, or in any other room exposed to humidity. To successfully install it, a prerequisite: prepare the funds well and choose the right glue.

What coating?

Do not confuse "kitchen" wallpapers, that is to say paper coverings coated with a layer of vinyl, and washable wall coverings, with enamel surface on stabilized PVC support, which have good sealing as well as impact and heat resistance. The second are particularly interesting for bathrooms and laundry rooms, even if they also find their place in other rooms of the house. Manufacturers currently offer a wide variety of decorations, often updated, in particular imitations of tiles (as in this case), marbles, grained or stippled surfaces, and a remarkable range of colors. These coatings, classified M1 (hardly flammable), are generally sold under a width of 1 m or 70 cm.

Anti-mold additive

If you notice on the walls of the laundry room or the bathroom the presence of mold and fungi, add an anti-mold additive to the vinyl adhesive. This will prevent the reappearance of mold stains at the joints and on the coating itself. Observe the doses recommended by the manufacturer. This additive does not change the qualities of the adhesive.

Products to prepare funds

• Hardener:

on plasterboard, new plaster, plastered with mortar or whitewash, use a hardener (fixative-regulator) which makes it possible to treat powdery and brittle parts. By reducing the porosity of the bottoms, this product significantly limits the consumption of glue (which is relatively expensive).

• Neutralizers:

if you have to apply (as in this case) a flexible wall covering directly on concrete or on a mortar plaster, use a neutralizing glue: it brings the alkalinity of the support to an average value, which eliminates the risks detachment and blistering due to chemical reactions with the adhesive. It also promotes adhesion of the glue and reduces consumption.

• Primer for hanging:

it is possible to install flexible wall covering on a smooth and difficult surface, for example on an old earthenware tile that has become unsightly. However, it is first necessary to apply (with a roller), after a solid cleaning, a bonding primer which strongly strengthens the adhesion of the adhesives and avoids subsequent detachments.
